Junior Electrical Design Engineer – Ipswich Ref 2025
About the Role:
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a motivated and technically minded Junior or Intermediate Electrical Design Engineer to join a well-established building services engineering team based in Ipswich. The role involves contributing to the design and delivery of electrical services for a diverse range of UK-based projects, with a particular focus on sectors such as retail, commercial, industrial, and mission-critical infrastructure.
You will play a key role in supporting the development of compliant, efficient, and coordinated electrical systems from concept through to detailed design and construction. This is a hands-on role ideal for someone looking to build a long-term career in building services engineering with the opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers, gain structured mentorship, and work towards professional registration (IEng or CEng).
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the design and specification of electrical building services systems, including low voltage distribution, lighting and emergency lighting, fire alarms, small power, containment, and data/communications systems.
- Assist in the production of calculations, schematics, layouts, and technical documentation using appropriate industry software and standards.
- Ensure all designs meet current UK building regulations, British Standards (BS7671, etc.), and client-specific requirements.
- Carry out site surveys and inspections to support the design process and monitor installation quality and compliance.
- Collaborate with mechanical, sustainability, and BIM teams to ensure fully integrated and coordinated MEP designs.
- Support senior engineers with client meetings, design reviews, and technical submissions.
- Contribute to feasibility studies, condition reports, and value engineering exercises.
Requirements:
- Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Ideally 1–3 years of UK-based experience in the building services consultancy or contracting sector.
- Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Dialux/Relux, Trimble ProDesign (Amtech), and ideally Revit or similar BIM tools.
- Understanding of UK construction practices and electrical design principles for buildings.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Eagerness to learn and develop technical and professional skills within a supportive environment.
Desirable Attributes:
- Experience working on electrical design projects across various sectors (e.g. retail, commercial, or industrial).
- Awareness of low-carbon design principles and sustainability in building services.
- Working knowledge of CDM regulations and health & safety in design.
- Progress toward or interest in working toward professional accreditation (e.g. CIBSE, IET).
