About the Role

We are looking for a Senior / Associate Mechanical Engineer to join an engineering‑consultancy team in Milton Keynes, specialising in low‑carbon, sustainable mechanical & electrical design. You will lead mechanical design work across a wide variety of projects, ensuring technical excellence, cost effectiveness, and stakeholder satisfaction. You’ll work collaboratively, mentor more junior staff, influence design strategy, and help shape how we deliver sustainable engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver mechanical engineering designs (HVAC, plumbing, ventilation, etc.) from concept through to detailed design, preparing drawings, specifications, calculations, and reports.
  • Ensure designs are low carbon, energy efficient, cost-effective, and compliant with relevant standards and regulations.
  • Undertake thermal, load, energy modelling and performance analyses to inform design choices.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineering disciplines (electrical, civil, structural), architects, clients, and contractors to coordinate designs.
  • Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and oversight to junior engineers and design team members.
  • Review and QA mechanical engineering deliverables, including peer reviews, design stage reviews, and cost‑tendering reviews.
  • Contribute to project proposals, programming, budgeting, and risk assessments.
  • Ensure practical implementation of sustainable solutions, aligning with commercial constraints and client goals.
  • Occasionally visit sites for inspections, oversight, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Keep up to date with changes in regulations, emerging technologies, and best practices in sustainable building services.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent; Chartered or progressing towards Chartered status preferred.
  • Several years (typically 5‑10+) of experience in mechanical building services design in consultancy.
  • Strong technical competence in HVAC, ventilation, plumbing systems, thermal modelling and energy analysis.
  • Experience delivering sustainable / low carbon design solutions. Familiarity with standards/regulations for energy efficiency and decarbonisation.
  • Excellent CAD / BIM skills (Revit, or similar) and experience coordinating across disciplines.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal; able to present to clients, lead meetings, and coordinate with multi‑disciplinary teams.
  • Commercial awareness: ability to balance cost, performance, and sustainability.
  • A proactive approach, ability to take ownership, problem solve, and deliver to deadlines.

Desirable

  • Prior experience working in sectors such as residential (student accommodation / PRS / care homes), education, industrial, or public sector.
  • Experience with energy modelling tools and software (e.g. IES, eQuest, or similar).
  • Familiarity with quality assurance protocols, peer review, sector‑specific design standards.
  • Some experience in business development, client liaison or proposal writing.
