Building Physics Consultant
About the Company
My client is an independent Building Physics, Simulation & Sustainability consultancy established in 2005. They specialise in delivering environmentally responsible and high-performance buildings through expert technical analysis and advice. Their core services include building performance simulation, energy and carbon analysis, daylight modelling, and life cycle assessment. In addition, with projects spanning residential, commercial, education, and international sectors, they are recognised for their robust and practical approach to sustainability in the built environment.
The Building Physics Role
This consultancy is looking for a passionate and technically skilled Building Physics Consultant to join their growing team. In this role, the successful candidate will work across all stages of building design, providing data-driven insight and simulation expertise to support high-performing, sustainable developments. You will collaborate with architects, engineers, planners and clients to optimise building performance and meet regulatory and planning requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake dynamic thermal modelling, overheating assessments, daylight/sunlight analysis, energy performance simulation, and other building physics studies.
- Produce compliance assessments in line with relevant standards and regulations (e.g. Part L, SAP/SBEM, TM59, etc.).
- Carry out embodied carbon and life cycle carbon assessments.
- Support passive design strategies and low-energy design principles from early-stage concept through detailed design.
- Collaborate with wider design teams and provide actionable recommendations based on simulation results.
- Support sustainability assessments (BREEAM, Net Zero, etc.) and planning submissions.
- Contribute to internal knowledge sharing and, where applicable, mentor junior team members.
- Engage in post-occupancy evaluation and building performance analysis where appropriate.
Requirements
- A degree in Building Physics, Mechanical/Environmental Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related field.
- Proven experience in building performance modelling, preferably within a UK consultancy environment.
- Proficient in simulation software such as IES VE, DesignBuilder, EnergyPlus, PHPP, or similar.
- Familiarity with UK regulations and standards, including Part L, TM52/TM59, and energy/carbon planning policies.
- Strong report writing and communication skills, with the ability to present complex findings clearly to clients and design teams.
- A proactive and detail-oriented mindset with a strong interest in sustainable design and climate-resilient buildings.
Desirable
Ideally, the candidate would have experience in embodied carbon / life cycle assessment tools (e.g. OneClick LCA, etc.). Experience working with daylight analysis tools, awareness of BREEAM, WELL, Passivhaus, or Net Zero Carbon framework, and some experience in post-occupancy monitoring or building performance evaluation. If you have an interest in innovation, research or emerging trends in sustainable architecture and engineering, this could be a great fit for you!
What’s on Offer
- An opportunity to join a mission-driven consultancy delivering genuinely sustainable buildings.
- Exposure to a wide variety of projects and the opportunity to influence early-stage design.
- Supportive, collaborative team environment with scope for professional development.
- Competitive salary and flexible working options (hybrid or remote working possible depending on location and experience).
